New free services are available to families as they care for loved ones with Alzheimer’s, dementia and memory loss. Edgemere senior living community is providing a free family support group every Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at The Plaza at Edgemere, including free caregiving services for loved ones experiencing Alzheimer’s and dementia.
“This is a free service to anyone in the Dallas-area community that shouldn’t be unique, but unfortunately it is,” said Holly Worrell, Lifestyles Director at Edgemere. “Many families can’t participate in much-needed support groups because they can’t find caregiving services for their loved ones even for just an hour or two. We want to be sure we bridge that gap so everyone gets the help they need.”
The Weekly Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support Group at Edgemere with caregiving services – and a fun, engaging memory care activity – came about when Worrell couldn’t find such help for her own mother. The community support group is open to anyone, whether a family member is a resident at Edgemere or not. It provides a place for family members to share ideas with like-minded people, improve coping skills and share experiences and challenges.
Edgemere is a Certified Alzheimer’s & Support Group Facilitator and also sponsored the Dallas Walk to End Alzheimer’s in October.
“It is our hope that the community would feel welcome to participate, even if they have no connection to Edgemere, and the service would spread to other facilities and communities in the area,” said Worrell.
