As children venture online, they are exposed to misinformation, distraction, algorithmic addiction, and social media pressure earlier than most are ready. And it’s taking a toll on their mental health., according to Partner at Nail Communications.
Beckett continues, “As we watched digital ecosystems become more manipulative, we realized kids needed help building defense mechanisms and coping skills,” And it was clear that if we wanted to make a difference, we needed to get to them before the phones did.”
That was the inspiration behind Mindy and Mind, NAIL Communications’ first children’s book.
“We wanted to take our understanding of cognitive biases and how they can lead our thinking astray and turn it into a tool for good,” added Stephen Fitch, Nail’s Director of Strategy.
Mindy and Mind follows a young girl named Mindy as she tackles the ups and downs of her day with her companion, “Mind.” It’s a fun read where kids learn along with Mindy that their minds are powerful—but not always correct.
“As kids see Mindy successfully overcome problems created by her brain’s over-reactions and reflexive judgments, they learn how to challenge their own unhelpful thoughts and be the heroes of their own stories,” Beckett said.
And for the curious adults steering these young minds, an appendix dives deeper into cognitive biases, offering strategies to fortify their children against those sneaky thinking errors that shape our minds—and, ultimately, our society.
“The ability to ‘think about how you think’ can help kids as they head into their teenage years,” Fitch concludes, “But it’s also a lifelong skill that can ultimately help them become better consumers and citizens.”
