Sykesville resident is a 40-plus year veteran of the statewide public TV network

Maryland Public Television (MPT) today announced the promotion of Harry Vaughn to the newly created position of vice president, Production & Facility Services.

A Sykesville, Maryland resident, Vaughn will be responsible for the daily operation, planning, budgeting, and management of MPT’s production studios, linear and non-linear editing suites, post-production audio suites, and electronic field units. He’ll also oversee the maintenance and security of MPT’s 135,000-square-foot physical plant and manage the network’s work-for-hire operations, which provide video production services and facility rentals to serve clients throughout the region. Vaughn will lead a team of more than 40 production professionals, maintenance technicians, and security personnel. He will start in his new role on January 1, 2025.

Vaughn joined MPT in 1982 as an intern on the series The Critics’ Place and was hired in 1983 as a production assistant for the program A.M. Weather. He became a full-time videographer in 1989, working on productions including Outdoors MarylandTo The Contrary, and Mini Dragons. In 1994, he took on the role of editor of MPT’s Emmy® Award-winning national series MotorWeek.

In 1999, Vaughn became a production supervisor and two years later was promoted to production manager. He assumed the role of managing director of Production Services in 2004 and was promoted to senior managing director in 2022.

Vaughn’s promotion occurs as part of a restructuring following the retirement announcement of Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer George Beneman. MPT has created two separate operating divisions reporting to the president and chief executive officer – Engineering & Technology Services and Production & Facility Services – the latter of which Vaughn will lead in the new year. MPT’s search for a senior-level executive to oversee the Engineering & Technology Services Division will begin in early 2025.

Vaughn was inducted to the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter’s prestigious Silver Circle in 2021, recognizing his more than 25 years as a significant contributor to the statewide public TV network. He is also part of the current class of Leadership Baltimore County.
