Recognized expert in water and wastewater innovation takes leadership roles in revitalizing ASTM International standards for high-purity water and is co-chairing new standards task group for hydrogen-based electrolyzers and fuel cells.
Lando & Anastasi LLP (L&A) celebrates Gary C. Ganzi, Senior Counsel at L&A and former Head of IP at Evoqua | Xylem, for his leadership in two pivotal ASTM initiatives. His contributions are advancing important standards in both water quality and the emerging hydrogen economy, solidifying his reputation as a leader in water innovation.
Gary is sub-chair of the ASTM Subcommittee D19.08 on Membranes and Ion Exchange Materials, and, on behalf of Subcommittee D19.02, led an expert team, comprising both water producers and end users, to revitalize and reapprove ASTM’s Standard Specification for Reagent Water (D1193), ensuring it reflects the latest technological advancements and meets the evolving needs of industries worldwide. This foundational standard provides critical guidance for regulatory agencies, laboratories, and industries reliant on consistent, high-purity reagent grade water, as is utilized in the life sciences, environmental, and other advanced technical fields.
Additionally, Gary is applying his water industry expertise to his work with a newly formed ASTM collaboration group AC837, which he co-chairs along with the chair of subcommittee D03.14 (Hydrogen and Fuel Cells). This collaboration aims to develop standards relating to electrolyzers and fuel cells, which require essential technologies for advancing clean energy solutions such as for green hydrogen synthesis and use in electricity generation. The task group is expected to direct water quality standards and subcomponent test methods, and will establish critical guidelines to support safety, efficiency, and scalability in the growing hydrogen economy.
“Collaborating with stakeholders and ASTM on these important initiatives has been a rewarding opportunity. We have been able to drive meaningful progress in water standards that are vital to anyone using laboratory-grade water,” Ganzi noted. “We are also looking forward to bringing together diverse and innovative perspectives in the hydrogen task group to drive forward much-needed standards in this burgeoning area.” ASTM is seeking experts worldwide in all phases of production and use of hydrogen, as well as experts in membranes, ion exchange, and water treatment, to be part of this group.
While Gary’s contributions to ASTM International are conducted independently of L&A, the firm is proud to honor his achievements as they exemplify the type of cutting-edge expertise and industry experience that defines L&A’s approach to the practice of intellectual property law. With more than 30 years of experience in chemical engineering, water and wastewater treatment technologies, and IP, Gary brings a unique perspective to these projects within ASTM and to his clients.
“We are extremely proud of Gary for his leadership in these transformative ASTM initiatives,” said Peter C. Lando, Co-Founding Partner of L&A. “His work in these areas reflects the unrivaled expertise and technical depth he brings to our clients every day.”
