Newmark Vice Chairman Robert Emden recently sat down with citybiz to discuss key moments in throughout his career in the commercial real estate industry—spanning nearly six decades.
Emden began his career in 1972, as Edward S. Gordon’s (ESG) first associate hire. While there, he garnered the respective of industry peers and colleagues, gradually rising through the ranks to become a stakeholder. Following his tenure at ESG, Emden held senior roles at PBS and USI Real Estate Advisors, LLC, where he specialized in tenant and landlord agency representation.
In 2010, Emden joined Newmark—one of the top commercial real estate advisors and service providers in the world—as an Executive Managing Director, representing the most prominent private equity, hedge funds, family offices, landlords and developers in NYC for over a decade. Evidenced by the more than $3 billion in lease obligations that he has negotiated over the course of his year, and deep roster of institutional clients, Emden was promoted to Vice Chairman in 2022.
Today, and a result driven by the pandemic, Emden splits his time between Newmark’s New York HQ and satellite office in West Palm Beach, where he and his wife reside part of the year. Over the last four years, Emden has established a robust book of business in the South Florida market, which continues to expand.
Perhaps one of the most rewarding experiences of Emden’s tenure at Newmark, is his ability to work alongside his son David Emden, an Executive Managing Director in firm’s NYC office, where he supports the oversight and day-to-day operations of the team’s northeast-centric agency portfolio.
