citybiz+ Sports Media Startup ScorePlay Closes $13 Million Series A

New York-based ScorePlay, which builds tech infrastructure to help sports organizations manage their content, has closed a $13 million Series A led by London’s 20VC, and a clutch of global organizations and sports stars.

Harry Stebbings’ 20VC was joined in the funding by Alexis Ohanian’s Seven Seven Six, APEX Capital, BYL Ventures, Alex Morgan’s Trybe Ventures, the International Basketball Federation known as FIBA, and angel investors such as former Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg, Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins,  Senegal soccer player Edouard Mendy, Algerian soccer captain Aïssa Mandi, French mixed martial artist Ciryl Gane and former captain of the U.S. women’s soccer team Alex Morgan.

French Roots

French duo Victorien Tixier and former Amazon data engineer Xavier Green, founded ScorePlay in 2021 with the initial goal of helping a French soccer club manage its photos. It has since emerged into a firm with specialized tech to streamline distribution of media content and optimize revenues for sports organizations.

“When we started ScorePlay with Xavier in 2021, we had a simple mission: help Toulouse Football Club better manage their photos,” Tixier, who has a masters degree in digital management from France’s HEC, said on LinkedIn. “Through countless nights of coding and endless conversations with sports content creators, that modest beginning has evolved into something we never could have imagined: creating the media infrastructure powering sports worldwide.”

Over 200 Customers

Over the past four years, ScorePlay has become the go-to firm for over 200 sports organizations worldwide. Its platform serves over 50 U.S. teams including NBA and NHL franchises, over 100 European clubs across Premier League, LaLiga and Bundesliga, and over 50 leagues and federations.

ScorePlay said its revenues tripled last year and it became profitable ahead of the Series A. The funding will “fuel the company’s expansion and support ongoing platform innovation,” the company said.

“ScorePlay’s growth and impact over the past year have been remarkable, and we were blown away by the reception to the platform at the inaugural Athlos in September,” said Ohanian, a co-founder of social media platform Reddit. “They’re setting a new standard for the industry and this was obvious in the founding days of Angel City FC, which is why we invested then and every round since.”
