DLA Piper attorney Shale D. Stiller, who also serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree conferred by Maryland Carey Law and the University of Maryland, Baltimore, as part of the university’s 2021 commencement festivities.
Stiller focuses his practice on complex litigation, business law and tax law and has a distinguished record of legal work and advocacy in Maryland. He and another DLA Piper lawyer, the late Roger D. Redden, were the principal writers of the state’s statutory laws on decedents’ estates and then moved on to reorganize and rewrite the 40 volumes of Maryland statutes. He has been an Adjunct Professor at Maryland Carey law for 58 years, teaching federal estate and gift taxation, constitutional law, commercial law, federal jurisdiction and the law of nonprofit organizations. Stiller’s commitment to Baltimore and community service has included being an active officer and director of many foundations, one of which is one of the largest private foundations in the world, with over $2 billion in assets. He has been a member of the American Law Institute for over 50 years, actively participating in the writing of seven Restatements.
He received his LL.B. degree from Yale University and has a Master of Liberal Arts degree from Johns Hopkins University (JHU). In 2016, Johns Hopkins awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Stiller serves on the Board of Trustees of JHU, as well as Johns Hopkins Medicine, and is an emeritus member of the Health Advisory Board at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
