In her talk “Doing Power Differently,” the author of “Girl Power: Sustainability, Empowerment, and Justice” will lay out the facts from the first-ever global data on female empowerment. In will share real-life stories of empowered girls tackling global crises like climate change, terrorism, gun violence, and war.
Pink Chair Storytellers Magazine will host actionist Jin In, author of Cambridge University’s inaugural element on sustainability “Girl Power: Sustainability, Empowerment, and Justice,” and founder of 4Girls Glocal (4GGL) to discuss how every country and culture can harness girl power to change the world. The lecture will be on April 3rd at 6:00 at The Woodward School for Girls, 1102 Hancock Street ,Quincy, MA. The event is part of Pink Chair Storyteller Magazine’s Pink Chair Conversation series and is presented by New England Medical Group and sponsored by Kaizen.
Jin In’s mission is to show the world that an empowered girl is a powerful force for change, and has been called to help tackle persistent global challenges like poverty, climate change, and insecurity. She has worked with both Democratic and Republican administrations, White House National Security Council, Departments of State, Defense, and Homeland Security, UN Agencies, NATO, and grassroots organizations in 145 countries. Serving as the inaugural girls’ health fellow in the first federal office dedicated to gender equity and policy, the Office on Women’s Health, Office of the Secretary, US Department of Health and Human Services, she created the first federal health program for young people, by young people, quadrupling congressional funding for girls and winning awards from the White House as well as the private sector. She also founded a nonprofit organization, For Girls GLocal Leadership (4GGL) and until recently, she was the first Assistant Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion at Boston University.
Jin’s commitment to empowerment and justice stems from her personal story. Born into one of the wealthiest families in a then-underdeveloped South Korea, which offered no rights or protection for females, poverty became her new reality after her father died. Her mother immigrated Jin and her sister to the United States and it was in Texas where Jin’s learned from an unlikely mentor, that an eight-year-old immigrant from a poor country, raised by a widow, can change the world.
With a Master’s in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley, Jin has also studied medicine, global affairs and theology.
“Jin’s extraordinary work and personal story will be featured in our inaugural Power Issue, and we are honored to host her in the Pink Chair,” said Bridget Ryan Snell, Chief Editor of Pink Chair Storytellers Magazine. “Jin is a powerhouse, but her book and research are game changers for those who need data to prove the theory that empowerment of girls is the greatest untapped resource in any country.”
Tickets are available by visiting PinkChairStorytellers.com/events ($30 for subscribers/$45 for nonsubscribers/$25 for students).
“Victor Hugo profoundly noted, ‘Nothing else in the world … not all the armies … is so powerful as an idea whose time has come’, said Jin. “This is Girl Power. The place and time is right here, right now!”
