The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath), North America’s premier mathematics museum, announced a $60 million capital campaign to support its expansion to a new, larger space at 635 Sixth Avenue in Chelsea in Manhattan. The new MoMath is expected to open in early 2026.
“Mathematics has never been more important in society. MoMath has presented math to people of all ages in creative and engaging ways,” commented John Overdeck, Board Chair, National Museum of Mathematics. “I was proud to support MoMath’s launch in 2012, and I am equally thrilled to be leading this milestone capital campaign for its inspiring expansion.”
MoMath’s new 34,363-square-foot home, located on the southwest corner of 19th Street and Sixth Avenue, will be filled with dozens of new interactive exhibits, popular favorite exhibits, engaging events, and many opportunities to explore the wonder of math. The new building’s large “department store” street level windows will showcase MoMath’s activities and programs.
“As a kid, I loved math, and I wish I could have explored it more beyond the classroom, especially with others who shared the same passion. I enjoy providing that opportunity for people of all ages who find math fun to think about,” said Marilyn Simons, Trustee, National Museum of Mathematics. “I’m really looking forward to the new exhibits and seeing people engage with them.”
“Mathematics is everywhere — it fuels innovation, shapes our world, and sparks curiosity at every age,” said Cindy Lawrence, MoMath’s Executive Director and CEO. “Since opening our doors in 2012, MoMath has reached over 1.4 million people with our mission to share the beauty and excitement of math.
“Demand for MoMath’s exhibits and programs is higher than ever, and every year we welcome tens of thousands of students, families, and lifelong learners. We look forward to continuing to serve New Yorkers and visitors from around the world to experience dozens of innovative exhibits in our new, larger location.
“Thanks to early donors, we’ve raised $42 million toward our $60 million goal,” Lawrence added, “and now we’re inviting our MoMath family in the city, across the country, and worldwide to be part of this incredible moment.”
The new MoMath site in Chelsea is nearly double the size of its original space at 11 East 26th Street, which had been serving the public since 2012. MoMath also has developed a devoted international audience in 130 countries around the world with virtual programming, which began in 2020 when the Museum was closed for a year due to the pandemic. MoMath’s new location will add space for more hands-on exhibitions for families and visitors, feature a space for early learners, a presentation area and a total of six classrooms.
The Museum is currently at a temporary space, MoMath on Fifth, at 225 Fifth Avenue. The pop-up location on Fifth Avenue is expected to stay open into 2026.
