What inspired you to start TRUE Model Management, and what was your vision when you founded it?

My vision for TRUE Model Management stemmed from my 20-plus years as a busy working model. I always believed there could be a better way for models to be represented, with more support and guidance in an industry that can be quite harsh.

The turning point came when I faced an unexpected pregnancy and cancer diagnosis simultaneously, which abruptly ended my modeling career. This challenging period inspired me to transform TRUE from my personal career management venture into a full-service management company, representing models of all shapes, sizes, and ethnicities.

Throughout my modeling career, I was constantly scouting stand-ins for myself and connecting models with clients. Starting TRUE was a natural progression of what I had already been doing. It happened quickly, with minimal planning, as an extension of my lifelong passion for connecting people from all walks of life.

Little did I know that creating TRUE would become my journey from model to manager, serving as a catalyst for innovation and inclusivity in fashion. By broadening representation, I’ve not only reshaped my own career but also opened doors for aspiring models facing their own unique challenges. TRUE Model Management is my way of creating the supportive, diverse, and inclusive modeling industry I always envisioned.

Can you share a bit about your early career as a model and how that experience shaped your approach to managing models?

My journey in the modeling industry began with representation by one of the world’s largest and most prestigious agencies. It was a competitive “survival of the fittest” environment. While staying true to myself, I quickly learned to refine my presentation as a model.

I was keenly observant, studying the mannerisms of top models and extensively researching fashion styles, brands, and key industry figures. This involved immersing myself into the fashion world – shopping brands, attending many events, and developing meaningful business relationships. My genuine interest in people naturally led me to help others achieve their goals.

When I founded TRUE Model Management, I was driven by a desire to transform the industry’s business culture and narrow representation standards. Having never fit into conventional molds myself, I created a company rooted in authenticity, focused on bringing out each model’s inner beauty while enhancing their outer beauty. My vision was to foster an environment where every model felt valued, diversity was celebrated, and our clients shared our commitment to inclusivity.

As a detail-oriented perfectionist, I leveraged these traits while developing greater adaptability and learning when to let go. I applied these lessons to management, ensuring our models were well-prepared and versatile. TRUE was envisioned as a catalyst for shifting traditional industry paradigms, showcasing that beauty truly comes in all forms.

This approach has enabled us to create a nurturing environment where models can flourish while expanding the boundaries of representation in fashion. Our mission extends beyond securing bookings; we’re dedicated to fostering personal growth and reshaping societal perceptions of beauty.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while building TRUE Model Management, and how did you overcome them?

When I started building TRUE Model Management and representing other models, my life was full of immense personal and professional challenges that tested my resilience and determination. I was simultaneously battling an abrupt and major career loss, cancer and pregnancy. In a whirlwind of life-changing events, I sold all of my assets—including my home, car, and boat—got married, was hospitalized and started a business.

The aftermath of my cancer surgery left me unable to speak or eat solid food for a while, which was particularly challenging for someone in an industry built on communication. As I slowly regained my strength and speech, I was also laying the foundation for TRUE with an incredible business colleague who has remained an integral part of the company for nearly two decades.

One of the most significant hurdles when I started and still today, is balancing the demanding operational aspects of running a company while nurturing the relationships crucial to our industry. The administrative tasks—managing contracts, coordinating logistics, overseeing employees, and handling finances—are time-consuming and frustrating. However, I’ve discovered that investing in relationships not only brings me joy, it also has become the cornerstone of our success.

My passion for connecting people—models, brands, and industry professionals—to create successful collaborations is the driving force behind TRUE. I make it a priority to guide models through the complexities of the industry while fostering a sense of community rather than competition. This approach was counter to the industry norm, but I believed in creating a supportive environment where models could connect and uplift each other.

Overcoming these challenges required unwavering determination, a strong support system, and an innovative approach to the modeling industry. By focusing on building genuine relationships and prioritizing the well-being of our models, TRUE has not only survived, but thrived. The most rewarding aspect of this journey has been witnessing the growth and success of our models—both in their careers and personal lives—over the years.

This experience taught me that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, passion, perseverance, and a commitment to one’s values can lead to success and positive industry change.

TRUE Model Management is known for representing models alongside traditional and commercial fit models. What makes fit modeling such an essential part of the fashion industry?

Fit modeling is the unsung hero that is crucial to the fashion industry. First and foremost, it’s all about perfecting the garment. Our fit models work closely with designers and manufacturers to fine-tune every aspect of clothing – from the way it drapes to how it moves when you walk.

But it’s more than just looking good, it’s about feeling good too. When clothes fit well, customers are happier, more confident, and more likely to come back for more.

The fashion world is finally embracing diversity in body types, and fit models are at the forefront of this change. Fit modeling was inclusive before other types of modeling and fit models help create clothing that flatters a wide range of shapes and sizes.

From a business perspective, fit models are invaluable: they catch potential issues before clothes hit mass production, saving brands from costly mistakes and returns. It’s a win-win – customers get better-fitting clothes, and brands see better sales. If garments fit well, they sell well and brands’ returns are lower.

At TRUE, we see fit modeling as an integral part of the fashion ecosystem. It’s about offering a complete package to our clients, supporting them from the first sketch to the final runway walk.

In essence, fit models are the bridge between design and reality. They ensure that the beautiful garments you see in ads and on runways actually work in real life, on real bodies. And that, in my opinion, is what makes fit modeling absolutely essential to the fashion industry.

How has the modeling industry changed since you first started, and what trends do you see shaping its future?

The modeling industry has undergone significant transformation since its early days, and the future looks even more dynamic. Today, models are no longer just static images on a page – they’re multidimensional personalities with voices that resonate across various platforms.

The shift towards inclusivity has been one of the most profound changes. We’re seeing a beautiful diversity in shapes, sizes, ethnicities, genders, and ages represented in the industry. This isn’t just a fleeting trend; it’s a fundamental reimagining of beauty standards that better reflects our global society.

Technology is also reshaping the landscape. Virtual influencers and digital modeling are gaining traction, offering new ways to showcase fashion, especially in digital spaces. However, I believe the human element will always remain crucial in modeling.

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important. Models, designers, and brands are more conscious of their environmental impact, influencing everything from material choices to casting decisions.

Social media has revolutionized how models build their careers. It’s given them unprecedented control over their personal brands and direct access to their audiences. This blurring of lines between traditional modeling and influencer culture is likely to continue.

Looking ahead, I anticipate we’ll see even more emphasis on authenticity and individuality. The future of modeling isn’t just about looking good – it’s about feeling good, doing good – championing causes, representing diverse perspectives and connecting with audiences in meaningful ways.

What qualities do you look for when scouting new models, and what advice would you give to aspiring models trying to break into the industry?

When scouting new models, I and TRUE look for a combination of authenticity, versatility, and professionalism. A model needs to have a unique look, but more importantly, they should bring something special to the table that stands out beyond traditional beauty standards. Whether it’s their energy, the way they carry themselves, or their ability to adapt to different types of shoots, versatility is key.

I also prioritize models who have a strong sense of self and confidence, because the industry can be tough and rejection is a part of the journey. Models who are professional, easy to work with, and able to take direction well always stand out. I believe attitude is just as important as appearance. Someone who is hardworking, humble, and committed to their craft will always go far.

For aspiring models, my advice is: stay true to yourself, be your best self, and believe in yourself. Exude confidence but do not be arrogant. The industry is evolving, and there’s space for all kinds of beauty. Don’t be jealous and do not get discouraged by setbacks or rejection—welcome obstacles as learning opportunities and grow from them. Overcoming obstacles creates grit. Be patient, stay dedicated, and constantly work on improving your skills. Also, take care of yourself, both physically and mentally. Your well-being should always come first, and that includes managing the pressures that come with being in the spotlight. Trust your gut, do not follow the crowd, always remain open to opportunities, stay adaptable and persevere.

As a business leader, how do you balance the creative aspects of fashion with the business side of running a Management Company?

Balancing the creative aspects of fashion with the business side of running a Management Company is definitely a challenge, but it’s something I’ve learned to embrace and find harmony in over the years. At TRUE Model Management, I focus on maintaining a strong foundation in both creativity and business strategy.

On the creative side, I prioritize staying connected with the heart of the fashion and technology industries—whether that’s discovering fresh model, collaborating with designers, or pushing boundaries with inclusive and diverse campaigns. Creativity is what keeps us innovative and relevant in the industry.

On the business side, it’s essential to have strong systems in place—whether it’s managing finances, securing new client relationships, or ensuring our models’ careers are flourishing. I rely on a talented team that brings both creative vision and operational expertise to the table, so I don’t have to choose between the two.

Ultimately, it’s about creating an environment where both the creative energy and business strategies can thrive together. It’s a constant balancing act, but when done right, it leads to the most rewarding outcomes for our company, our models, and the brands we work with.

You’ve worked with major fashion brands. Can you share a memorable collaboration or project that stands out to you?

There were so many memorable experiences but a few highlights of specific projects are:

  • The groundbreaking opportunity to be the first swim and intimates model for major brands such as, The Gap, Banana Republic, Express, and Aerie. I thrived on the meticulous attention to detail – every curve, strap, and bit of coverage had to be perfect. I spent countless hours on and off the job, trying to ensure that each piece looked great and felt comfortable. These projects were an honor and I enjoyed helping brands establish their voice in new categories. Seeing these lines launch successfully, knowing I played a part from the ground up, was incredibly rewarding.

  • Working on Tommy Hilfiger’s first women’s line was an incredible experience. Spending weeks in Hong Kong with Tommy, his family, and the original team was intense and exciting. We were shaping the future of an iconic American brand, and I felt the weight of that responsibility. The creative energy was exhilarating as we worked tirelessly on fit and design. It was a masterclass in launching a new line, and I’m proud to have played a part in Tommy’s expansion into womenswear.

  • Traveling to Italy, Germany and Japan with Michael Kors was a dream come true. Michael’s attention to detail is unparalleled, and working alongside him to perfect the fit of his luxury pieces was both challenging and rewarding. We immersed ourselves in the world of Italian craftsmanship, focusing on how the finest fabrics should drape and move on the body. It was about creating a consistent, high-end fit that would translate across global markets – a crucial aspect of maintaining Michael’s impeccable standards.

  • Being part of Oleg Cassini’s final collection for David’s Bridal was a bittersweet honor. Oleg was a legend, and helping bring his vision to life one last time was deeply moving. We created a diverse range of dresses and white suits for all types of weddings, which required a delicate balance of traditional bridal aesthetics and modern trends. It was about ensuring that every bride, regardless of body type or style preference, could find her perfect look. This project really highlighted the importance of inclusivity in bridal fashion.

These experiences were pivotal in my career, showcasing not just my skills as a model, but my ability to contribute to the creative process across different styles and markets.  They reinforced my passion for the industry and fueled inspiration for the founding of TRUE Model Management, where I could continue shaping the fashion world in new ways.

How does TRUE Model Management prioritize inclusivity and diversity in the models it represents?

We actively seek out and support models who represent a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. We also collaborate with brands and designers who share our vision of creating more inclusive and representative campaigns. For us, diversity isn’t just a trend—it’s an essential part of life and to the future of fashion. By giving a platform to models who are often underrepresented, we hope to inspire change and help shape a more inclusive industry for all.

What’s next for you and TRUE Model Management? Are there any exciting projects or initiatives in the works?

We are on an exciting path of growth and innovation and are expanding opportunities for diverse model while championing ethical fashion practices. I’m currently organizing industry meetings around the Fashion Workers Act, aiming to unite our community for positive changes.

We will be launching more events focused on health and confidence-building – areas I’m passionate about. Looking ahead, TRUE will continue to lead in promoting diversity and driving meaningful industry shifts. Our goal is to empower models and influencers while pushing fashion towards a more inclusive and responsible future. I love the wellness space and want to incorporate more partnerships to promote health and happiness in our network and the TRUE family.
