Crystal Clearwater Resources Appoints Mark Berg as Chairman of the Board

Crystal Clearwater Resources, a wastewater solutions technology leader, today announced the appointment of Mark Berg as its Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Berg is a senior energy industry executive with extensive commercial and operational experience. He formerly served as Executive Vice President, Corporate Operations at Pioneer Natural Resources where he played a key role in transforming the company into a major U.S. shale oil and gas developer. Berg led the negotiating team for Pioneer’s $65 billion merger with ExxonMobil. During his tenure at Pioneer, Berg was responsible for multiple commercial and operational functions, including the company’s infrastructure and water management business, which provides an ideal background for CCR’s strategy to deploy its water treatment technology to manage wastewater produced from shale oil and gas operations.

“I am honored to join the CCR team as the company enters a crucial growth stage,” said Mark Berg, Chairman of Crystal Clearwater Resources’ Board of Directors. “Derek and his cross-functional operations and engineering leaders have developed cutting edge, proprietary technologies that address complex wastewater challenges across multiple industries. One of the top challenges in shale oil and gas development is disposal of produced wastewater. Approximately 20 million barrels per day of wastewater is produced from operations in the Permian Basin today, and that is expected to substantially grow as the basin matures. CCR’s innovative SPEC1 water treatment technology – combined with the disciplined leadership and mission-focused execution of the former Navy SEALs leading this company – is a perfect fit for the U.S. oil and gas industry.”

“We are excited and grateful to have Mark join our team, as his expertise will greatly benefit CCR’s work to transform the water industry and become a leader in clean tech water solutions,” said Derek Pedersen, CEO and co-founder of Crystal Clearwater Resources. “Mark’s experience and leadership in the oil and gas industry, as well as wastewater management will be instrumental as we commercialize and expand the application of our SPEC technology and advance our desalination capabilities.”

CCR Commercialization Update

Over the past four years, CCR completed multiple successful pilot projects partnering with large operators in the Permian Basin to test and improve its SPEC technology in treating water produced from oil and gas operations. The company is in the process of building its first commercial units and finalizing long-term contracts with operators to deploy the initial units in the Permian Basin. CCR’s water treatment equipment is easily scalable, cost efficient and can be specifically designed for oilfield use. The company’s SPEC technology has proven to yield clean water distillate that meets or exceeds surface discharge quality requirements despite the variability of the constituents in the water produced from oil and gas operations. CCR also deploys automation and AI in its operating systems to allow for remote operations and improved efficiency. While the company is initially focusing to commercialize its technology in the oil and gas industry, CCR is also evaluating opportunities to expand into other sectors.
