Gilbane Development Celebrates the Grand Opening of Sovren, an Award-Winning New Development in Hyattsville

With 293 apartments, 147 of them affordable, and a full suite of amenities, Sovren sets new standards for urban living and convenience

Gilbane Development, Amazon’s housing fund, local leaders, partners, and members of the community gathered last evening to celebrate the grand opening of Sovren, a vibrant, new award-winning and transformative addition to Hyattsville’s multifamily housing landscape. Located in the West Hyattsville neighborhood and in the Riverfront at West Hyattsville development, Sovren reflects a shared commitment to creating affordable, modern, transit-oriented housing solutions.

Sovren is a five-story multifamily community offering 293 apartments, including 147 units reserved for residents earning at or below 80% of the area median income (AMI). Situated on a 3.5-acre parcel at Ager Road and Little Branch Run, the development features 2,500 square feet of retail space and an art-wrapped parking garage with 298 spaces. With direct access to the West Hyattsville Metro Station and the Northwest Branch Anacostia River trail system, Sovren provides seamless connectivity to community, healthy activities, and major employment hubs in downtown D.C. and College Park, Maryland.

“We are proud to introduce Sovren as a new standard for luxury and affordable living in Prince George’s County,” said Robert Gilbane, Jr., Senior Vice President at Gilbane Development. “Partnering with Amazon’s housing fund, we share a commitment to building inclusive communities that serve diverse income levels and exemplify best-in-class transit-oriented development. With this second collaboration with Amazon, we are broadening access to modern, affordable housing and strengthening the long-term vitality of the region.”

The development project was awarded Best Residential Development award by the Washington Business Journal in March, with the publication noting that “Public art, sustainable green building-certification, transit-oriented and affordable housing are all parts of how Sovren won in this category.”

The grand opening ceremony featured distinguished speakers, including Robert Gilbane, Senthil Sankaran, Managing Principal of Amazon’s housing fund, Hyattsville Mayor Robert Croslin, and Wanika Fisher, Prince George’s County Councilmember. They shared insights on the collaborative journey that brought Sovren to life and its positive impact on the community.

“We are honored to celebrate the opening of Sovren, a development that exemplifies our vision for affordable, transit-oriented housing,” said Senthil Sankaran, Managing Principal of Amazon’s housing fund. “With its direct access to the West Hyattsville Metro Station and thoughtful amenities, Sovren connects residents to opportunities throughout the region while fostering a sense of community. We’re grateful for our partnership with Prince George’s County, whose support was instrumental in making this vision a reality, and to Gilbane Development for their commitment to creating high-quality housing that serves diverse income levels.”

Grand opening attendees enjoyed exclusive tours of Sovren, exploring its cutting-edge design, state-of-the-art amenities, and thoughtfully crafted spaces that enhance modern living. Highlights included a resort-style pool with cabanas, a fitness center with a dedicated yoga space, co-working areas, and pet-friendly facilities such as a dog park and pet-washing station. Outdoor grilling areas, fire pits, and an entertainment lounge with a billiards table and modern kitchen further showcased Sovren’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and connected community.

The project also exemplifies Gilbane Development’s dedication and commitment to sustainable and inclusive urban living in the DC area. Sovren has achieved NGBS Green Multifamily & Mixed-Use Building Certification (Gold), underscoring its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Sovren is a complement to Gilbane Development’s broader The Riverfront at West Hyattsville project and speaks to its continued investment in Prince George’s County. Other investments include the recently delivered Atworth, a vibrant, transit-oriented, mixed-use apartment community adjacent to the Metro, MARC, and to the future MTA Purple Line station; and TEMPO, a purpose-built student housing development serving students at the University of Maryland. Gilbane, which served alongside partners as developer and financing member and design-builder in the Blueprint Schools partnership with Prince George’s County Schools, designed, built, financed, and will maintain (for 30 years) six new public schools, which were delivered in 2023. In this effort, Gilbane awarded 33 percent of contracts ($134 million) to Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs), including $68 million awarded to Prince George’s County businesses and $65 million awarded to county MBEs.
