Q&A with Cara Velten, Partner at Gale Sitomer Design

Gale Sitomer Design is a full-service interior design firm known for its timeless, tailored approach to residential and commercial spaces. Founded by Gale Sitomer in 2002, the firm blends architecture, space planning, and lighting design to create interiors that feel both elevated and effortless. With a background in fashion and events, Gale brings a refined eye for detail, while partner Cara Velten, a trained architect, adds structural expertise. Together, they craft warm, modern environments that prioritize both beauty and livability.

Your firm is known for its timeless aesthetic. How do you balance innovation with classic design?

We are always watching current trends in the design space, and I think the trick is to pick and choose which ones have staying power, and which will just make your home look dated in a few years. For example, we are seeing a revival of 70s-inspired furniture.  While we love the lines and forms of these pieces, we would use a more timeless fabric on the upholstery so it wouldn’t feel trendy.

What key elements do you believe set Gale Sitomer Design apart from other firms in the industry?

Gale and I are typically involved with our clients far before furnishings are even on the agenda. Many of our clients will call us to go look at a property they are thinking of purchasing, and then we stay with them till every bed is made and the refrigerator is stocked. Our favorite projects are where we work with them on the architectural plans and details because this is the backdrop for the interior design. We always have the best end result when the architecture and interiors are developed hand in hand.

You’ve worked on both residential and commercial projects—how do you tailor your approach to each type of space?

Our basic approach is very similar for both types of projects. One of the first questions we ask a client in an initial meeting is “How do you want the space to feel?” Whether it’s a doctor’s office or a family apartment, establishing that mood is first and foremost.  Then, obviously, we will source products and materials that will function properly for the intended use.

What’s the most unique or unexpected request you’ve ever received from a client?

We designed a Hamptons home for a client, which was primarily used on weekends.  When we first completed the project, we set the house up with flowers, their preferred toiletries, basic groceries, etc, so when they came to the house for the first time on completion, they only had to bring their clothes and were ready to enjoy the house immediately. They fell in love with the way we set everything up, and they hired us to come every week and set it up before they came out for the weekend.

What’s one piece of design advice you find yourself giving clients over and over?

Always invest in the bones of your space before you spend on decorative items, if you are working with a budget. The same can also be applied when it comes strictly to furnishings.
