A group of fifth and eighth grade students from Jersey City Global Charter School recently traded in their pens and pencils for paint to complete a series of vibrant murals at 95 Columbus, a Jersey City office building owned and managed by Columbia Property Trust.
The eye-catching murals, which spell out “Love Yourself Jersey City,” are designed to bring additional color to the surrounding Grove Street neighborhood — an area renowned for its dynamic street art, live performances, and installations. Led by their teacher Maya Sanders, 11 students from Jersey City Global Charter School, an elementary school located just three miles from 95 Columbus, put the finishing touches on the murals on May 14 in collaboration with a group of local artists.
Ms. Sanders, a talented muralist whose striking works have graced the Jersey City arts scene for nearly a decade, conceived the design and worked directly with Columbia and the artists to make her vision a reality. The mural stretches over 200 feet across 50 wooden panels along the Grove Street side of the building, and each letter has been given its own unique design and color scheme.
The paintings adorn construction walls around 95 Columbus, which are in place as part of a major renovation program Columbia is completing at the building. A new double-height glass entrance at the building will welcome abundant natural light and building occupants into a reimagined lobby that features a fresh, modern design accented with greenery and other biophilic elements. The renovation will also provide enhanced building technology systems that enable complete automated digital access and state-of-the-art amenity spaces that together will promote health and wellness for building occupants and foster productivity and efficiency. Transformed retail spaces and storefronts will also elevate the look and feel of the building.
“We are thrilled by the opportunity to partner with Maya and these incredibly talented students in producing a mural that will serve as a point of pride for them and the entire Jersey City community,” David Cheikin, Senior Vice President of Asset Management and Leasing for Columbia. “We hope that everyone who passes 95 Columbus is as inspired by these students’ skill and creativity as we are, while we complete a renovation that will help this building continue to serve as an office destination for dynamic, forward-thinking companies in the Grove Street area.”
